· Tests
Students will have two or three tests each quarter. Tests are going to be based on exercises made in classes, homework exercises, and the book website practice tests. Students can open their notes during tests, which means that they should: 1) write in their notebooks all the exercises that we work on during classes, and 2) make corrections of their homework when we go over it during classes.
If for any reason a student misses a test, the student will take the test the next school day.
Tests must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned. Students who return tests signed will earn 3 additional points on the next test.
I am planning to assign students one or two projects during the school year. These projects will count as a test. This provides a good opportunity to raise their grades in case they need it.
· Quizzes
These are short but frequent. They require memorization. Most quizzes are going to be based on new vocabulary. Each quiz will include 10 to 15 words in Spanish for students to translate their meanings to English. If for any reason a student misses a quiz, the student will take the quiz the next school day.
· Homework
Students will have homework assignments almost everyday that we have class. I expect it to be completed for the next class. Students should answer the questions in pencil, so they can make corrections (if needed) during class homework reviews. Please, write clearly and neatly.
Students will have about 10 to 15 homework assignments per quarter. Homework is 30% of their grade, which means that each time the student doesn’t complete the assignment; he/she will loose up to 3 points of the final grade for the quarter. On the other hand, those students who complete all homework for the quarter will have not only the 30 points, but also a reward.
Late homework is not feasible because we go over homework during the following class. If a family emergency prevents a student from completing his/her homework, the parent must send a note (signed) with an explanation.
· Participation
During classes, I will ask questions about the homework, new vocabulary, grammar that we are working on, etc. The student who answers correctly gets a ticket. At the end of the quarter, I will collect their tickets. The participation grade is going to be based on the total amount of tickets each student cumulates during the quarter. Students will write their names in the back of each ticket. Students are responsible for keeping their tickets in a safe place.
· Behavior
Students are expected to respect the class boundaries. Whenever a student infringes one boundary, he or she will be assigned silent recess and will have to complete a behavior form to explain the reason of such behavior.
Behavior is 10% of the grade. All students start each quarter with 10 behavior points. Each behavior form completed is equivalent to minus two points (two points less from the final quarter grade).
After completing 3 behavior forms, I will notify parents about the situation taking place.
Important Notes:
1. If a class is cancelled for whatever reason, the following class operates as the cancelled one. Example: We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If we have a quiz planned for Tuesday, but we miss the class on Tuesday, we are going to have the quiz on Thursday.
2. When students are absent, they should check the class homepage for homework and grammar/vocabulary covered. When he/she comes back to classes, I will check his/her homework for full credit. Also, it is the student’s responsibility to copy/write notes taken in class from another student.
3. Interim progress reports will be issued mid-quarter for any student in danger of failing or who has shown a significant drop in achievement or attitude. Progress reports must be signed by a parent and returned the day after they are received.
